BigCi Artist Residency Nov-Dec 2020
I spent six weeks with three other artists at BigCi in the Blue Mountains. Initially I proposed making art around the local bushfires of summer 2019. To start with the drawings and paintings I made were influenced by the charcoal tree stumps dotted through the adjoining national park. However, over the six weeks my painting processes expanded to include ‘communication’ and nature’s cry for help. To do this my art took on a narrative form around the meanings and shapes of the very specific international communication system of Marine Signal Flags. Given this shift I still managed to stay true to my abstract, non-objective art processes and experimented with larger canvases, 150x150cm
