These are paintings from my 6week artist residency

BigCi Artist Residency Nov-Dec 2020, I spent six weeks with three other artists at ‘BigCi’ in the Blue Mountains. Initially I proposed an environmental project, making art around the local bushfires of summer 2019. At first, the drawings and paintings I made were directly influenced by the charcoal tree stumps dotted through the adjoining national park. But over the six weeks my painting processes became about ‘communication’ and nature’s cry for help looking at the cause of the fires rather than the results. My art took on a narrative form, around the meanings and shapes of the very specific international communication system of Marine Signal Flags. Given this shift and the direct comment, I still managed to stay true to my abstract, non-objective art processes. Because of the space I also experimented with larger 150x150cm canvases.
